My Sensation Map- The Aimless Trip

by Kiwii

On 18th of November, 2015, after 24 hours of transit, I arrived in England, the furthest west I have ever been on my global trekking map so far.

Have you ever had this feeling that when arriving at a new place, the first thing that comes to you mind is to find out your exact location on a map? By pinpointing an address, you are in search of this sense of security. I tend not to bring any tour guide books when I travel though. I’d just briefly pick up some background knowledge and basic directions of my destination. In my opinion, traveling with a guide book is merely checking off a cliche “must-visit” list.
I have this special map in my brain in which directions and coordinates do not apply. The map consists of my senses. I call it my sensation map. This time, my journey on my sensation map starts from Heathrow Airport, terminal 4, London.

My flight arrived before dawn. The nearly-one-hour ride from the airport to downtown London was all in lightless tunnels, so I’d say I first got to know London in a complete darkness. London’s underground railway system consists of more than a dozen of lines, red, yellow, orange, green, one crossing another in an extremely complex manner. To me, the railway map is like a ticking bomb circuit often seen in the movies that needs to be disarmed urgently. Some tube stations sounded familiar, like Bake Street Station and Oxford Street station. However, I passed them in the dark so I was not able to visualize them yet.

An hour later, I caught the very first glimpse of the British blue sky. It was at the King’s Cross Square. Coincidence or fate, this day resembled so much the first day I arrived in Australia four years ago. Lovely weather with a bit of chilliness.

What next as I embarked on my journey with my conscious sensations?

Kiwii
