The Origin of Lai Ho Column and Who Lai Ho is
by 王思雯(賴和基金會秘書)Ssu-Wen Wang, Secretary of Lai Ho Cultural and Educational Foundation
A while not too long ago, the Taoyuan City Councilor caused a dramatic scene by interrogating the Taoyuan City Government who Chung Chao- Cheng (鍾肇政) is and why establish a literature prize after his name. Before that, a news anchor mistakenly said “Chen Cheng- Po (陳澄波) himself is very concerned” during live broadcast. If you are not aware of these two incidents, you can find plenty of information on the internet. Regardless, what does this column have to do with these two incidents?
Since its establishment in 1994,Lai Ho Cultural and Educational Foundation has been continuously devoted to advocating Taiwanese culture and literature in accordance with its core value, Lai Ho’s righteous spirit. Yet regardless of the foundation’s 21-year local cultivation, still we get asked who Lai Ho is quite much. We even had got phone calls that were directed to Lai Ho. Under these rather embarrassing circumstances, it is apparent that we should aspire to do more to alleviate this habitual public indifference to local Taiwanese culture. We sincerely appreciate “White Post” for the opportunity to share the stories of Lai Ho and Changhua and to help you all know more about the city that we were born and raised in.
That said, we seem to have missed introducing you who Lai Ho is!
Lai Ho, born in Changhua in 1894, died in 1943, a prestigious doctor whom was called “Ho-á-sian”Dr. Ho (in Taiwanese language) in the memories of those local seniors. Maybe you have had acquaintance of him as an author in one of your high school textbooks with his rather difficult-to-read literal piece, “The ‘Steelyard’”. Your teacher might have told you that Lai Ho is the Father of the New Taiwanese Literature. He is quite impressive, right? Regardless, in the mind of the volunteers at Lai Ho Cultural and Educational Foundation, Lai Ho is a down-to-earth brotherly figure whom we call “Brother Ho”. Reading his ”Prison Diary”, readers can perceive his worries , melancholy and illness, just like any ordinary man as we are.
Are you curious about what more stories we will narrate Lai Ho and Changhua? We sincerely welcome you to pay a visit to Lai Ho Memorial Museum in Changhua. Also, stay tuned to the next Lai Ho column!
