Lai Ho Music Festival 2016, reading The Homecoming of Lai Ho
“If a product is not up to standard in a factory, it can bechanged and remade; if there is no use for a product once it is on the market or customers are dissatisfied with it, it will be forsaken for good. I had this same fear of being abandoned when I graduated from school and with great uneasiness, I returned home. “
“More than ten years of student life had made me feel like a stranger in my hometown. When I went out, I was treated as politely as a guest, which made me feel uncomfortable.
Wasn’t I just like a new and still-distrusted product on the market? This only increased my fears of being forsaken.”
This is Lai Ho’s novel, The Homecoming, written in 1932. It describes the state of mind of a graduated youth who fears returning home to find himself not needed, and the strange
sense of longing to fit in yet feeling everything no longer the same. Have you ever experienced this kind of feeling? After many years of studying or working in another city, what do you feel as you decide to return home?
“The only thing that made me feel easy after being home a few days was that there were no opportunities for me, which disappointed my family. There was no longer a problem of being useful and my fear of being forsaken naturally vanished.
As a result, I developed a courage to go out.” The theme of Lai Ho Music Festival 2016 is “Homecoming”, reflects the effort and determination of the young generation
invested in returning to and staying in their hometown. It also hopes to encourage more youths to come home and find the special connection between the self and the land. This is what Lai Ho Cultural and Educational Foundation has been promoting along with Taiwanese culture and literature over the years. From May 7th to Lai Ho’s birthday on May 28th, a series of Lai Ho Music Festival 2016: The Homecoming events will kick
off. We invite you to embark on a literature adventure following Lai Ho’s trace. There will be the homecoming youth sharing, exhibition of Lai Ho literary land art, Baguashan walking event and bouquet presentation to Lai Ho, Lai Ho Literary concert and cultural market.
